Summary

Proterra Operating Company, Inc. is recalling 252 of its 2020-2022 35" Catalyst, 35" ZX5, and 40" ZX5 heavy-duty electric buses. The windshield wiper motors in these vehicles can operate intermittently or stop working entirely, which violates federal safety standards for wiping and washing systems. To fix this safety issue, authorized dealers will replace the faulty wiper motors with new ones at no cost to the owner.

Risk

If the windshield wipers fail or work intermittently during rain or snow, driver visibility will be significantly reduced. This lack of visibility increases the risk of a crash while operating the vehicle.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your fleet records to see if you own or operate 2020-2022 Proterra 35" Catalyst, 35" ZX5, or 40" ZX5 vehicles.
  2. Identify affected vehicles by checking for the NHTSA recall number 23V078.
  3. Contact Proterra customer service at 1-864-438-0000 to schedule a free repair with an authorized dealer who will replace the wiper motor.
  4. If you have further questions, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
