BMW of North America, LLC: X5 and X7 Vehicles Recalled for Improperly Bonded Windshields

Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 47 of its 2023 X5 sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive45e, and X7 xDrive40i vehicles. The windshields on these vehicles may not have been properly attached to the frame during manufacturing. This defect could allow water to leak into the cabin and soak sensitive electrical components. If your vehicle is affected, a BMW dealer will inspect and, if necessary, reinstall the windshield with a new seal for free.

Risk

Water entering the vehicle can cause an electrical short-circuit in the onboard electronics. This significantly increases the risk of a vehicle fire, even while the car is parked or in motion.

What You Should Do

  1. Confirm if your vehicle is one of the affected 2023 models: BMW X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive45e, or X7 xDrive40i.
  2. Contact any authorized BMW dealership to schedule a free inspection of your windshield seal.
  3. If the inspection reveals an improper bond, the dealer will remove and reinstall the windshield with a new seal at no cost to you.
  4. For more information or to ask questions about your specific vehicle, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
  5. You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
