Winco Recalls Contraband 24 Canister Shell Fireworks Kit Due to Impact, Burn Hazards

Summary

Winco is recalling approximately 4,500 Contraband 24 canister shell fireworks kits. Some kits contain firing tubes that are too narrow, which prevents the 1 ¼ inch diameter shell from reaching the bottom. When fired, the shell can explode inside the tube instead of launching, potentially blowing a hole in the tube and scattering debris. One store employee has already suffered minor burns and cuts to their legs from a shell blowing up in a tube.

Risk

The fireworks shell can blow up inside the firing tube during use, posing severe impact and burn hazards to users and bystanders. This occurs when a narrow tube prevents the shell from being properly seated at the bottom before ignition.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the Contraband 24 fireworks kits and check for model number JP-933 printed on the front left of the cardboard box above the warning label.
  2. Identify the product by looking for a brown cardboard box approximately 28 inches tall with 'Contraband 24,' '24 Cannister Shells,' and 'Maximum Powder Load' printed in red and black on the front.
  3. Return the recalled fireworks kits to the original place of purchase to receive a full refund.
  4. For further instructions, contact Winco toll-free at (888) 697-2217 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit www.wincofireworks.com and click on the 'News' tab followed by the 'Contraband 24 Artillery Recall' link.
