Wilton Industries Recalls Chefmate Tea Kettles Due to Burn Hazard; Sold Exclusively at Target

Summary

Wilton Industries is recalling approximately 716,000 Chefmate 2-quart tea kettles due to serious safety defects. Steam can travel up the handle or water can spill from the spout, leading to five reports of steam burns and three reports of hot water spills. In addition, if water evaporates completely, the aluminum base can melt onto the stove burner, which has already happened to four consumers. These kettles have a black enamel finish, a solid black resin handle, and were sold exclusively at Target stores and Target.com between January 2006 and May 2013.

Risk

Leaking steam can burn a user's hand while holding the handle or prevent the kettle from whistling to alert the user that water is boiling. If the water boils away, the aluminum bottom can melt directly onto the stove surface, creating a fire and burn hazard.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the bottom of your tea kettle for the 'Chefmate' logo stamped into the aluminum base.
  2. Identify if your kettle has a black enamel finish and a solid black resin handle, which matches the affected model sold at Target.
  3. Immediately stop using any recalled tea kettle to prevent burns from steam or boiling water.
  4. Return the tea kettle to any Target store for a full refund of approximately $9.
  5. Alternatively, contact Wilton Industries toll-free at (866) 255-9237 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Thursday, or 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. CT Friday, or visit www.wilton.com and click on 'Recalls' for more information on receiving a refund.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
