Summary

BMW of North America is recalling approximately 720,796 vehicles across multiple series, including the 2-Series, 3-Series, 4-Series, 5-Series, X1, X3, X4, X5, and Z4 models from 2012 to 2018. An electrical connector on the water pump may not be properly sealed, allowing water to enter and cause a short circuit. Dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector if necessary and install a protective shield at no cost to owners.

Risk

A short circuit in the water pump's electrical connector significantly increases the risk of a vehicle fire, even while the vehicle is parked or in operation.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking the list of specific models: 2012-2015 X1, 2012-2016 Z4, 2012-2016 528i/328i, 2016-2018 X5 xDrive40e, 2014-2016 228i/428i, 2013-2017 X3, 2015-2018 X4, and 2015-2016 428xi.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair, which includes the installation of a protective shield and potential replacement of the water pump and connector.
  3. If you have questions, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
  4. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
