Summary

Walmart is recalling about 3,900 bottles of Better Homes and Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones, sold in six different scents between February 2021 and October 2021. The recall was initiated after testing found the 5-ounce glass bottles contained dangerous bacteria that can cause a rare and potentially fatal disease. Consumers should immediately stop using the spray and return it to any Walmart store for a full refund and a $20 gift card.

Risk

The room spray contains Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria, which causes melioidosis, a condition that is difficult to diagnose and can be fatal. Four cases of melioidosis, including two deaths (one involving a child), have been investigated in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, and Georgia.

  3. If you have used the spray in the last 21 days and develop a fever or other melioidosis symptoms, seek medical care immediately and inform your doctor about your exposure to the spray.
  4. Wash any sheets or linens that were sprayed with the product using normal laundry detergent and dry them completely in a hot dryer; wipe down surfaces that may have been sprayed with a disinfectant.
