Vivint Recalls Remotec Dimming Switch Modules Due to Shock Hazard (Recall Alert)

Summary

Vivint has recalled about 213,000 Remotec plug-in dimming and on/off switch modules, model ZDS-100US. These off-white modules, which measure about 5 inches long, were sold individually or as part of home automation and alarm systems to control lighting and appliances. The recall was issued because internal wiring was incorrectly installed, which can lead to electrical shocks for anyone touching the device. These units were sold nationwide between April 2011 and October 2014, and consumers should stop using them and destroy them immediately.

Risk

Incorrect internal wiring in the module creates a direct path for electricity to reach the exterior or connected components, posing a serious shock hazard to consumers. While no injuries have been reported, the defect makes the device unsafe to handle while plugged into an outlet.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the back of your off-white plug-in module for the 'Remotec' brand name and model number 'ZDS-100US' printed in black.
  2. Verify the serial number on the rear of the device; recalled units have serial numbers beginning with the first four digits ranging from 1115 through 1440 (for example, '1424-T14006').
  3. Immediately unplug and stop using any recalled module.
  4. The original replacement remedy is no longer available; you must destroy the product to prevent further use and dispose of it according to local electronic waste guidelines.
  5. For further questions, contact Vivint toll-free at 855-759-8189 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.vivint.com and click on 'Product Recall'.
  6. Contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional safety concerns.
