Summary

Verizon is recalling approximately 2.5 million Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspots imported by Franklin Wireless because the lithium-ion battery can overheat, creating a fire and burn risk. These dark navy, oval-shaped devices were sold nationwide at Verizon stores, school districts, and online from April 2017 through March 2021. Consumers should immediately follow the safety and update instructions in the What You Should Do section and contact Verizon for a free replacement device.

Risk

The internal battery can overheat during use or charging, which has led to 15 reports of overheating, including six fires that damaged bedding or flooring and two reports of minor burn injuries.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify your device by looking for 'verizon' printed below the digital display on the front and checking the charger wire for a sticker that states: 'Compatible: FWC MHS900L, Model: FWCR900TVL, DC151030'.
  2. Power the unit off, unplug it from its power source, and store it in a place away from children, on a hard surface with adequate ventilation and away from combustibles until it can be returned.
  3. If you must use the device for internet access: Turn the hotspot 'on' and plug it in to receive two over-the-air automatic software updates that enable the device's identifying number to be viewed on its scrolling screen and prevent the device from charging while the device is plugged in and powered on.
  4. After the software update is applied: Leave the device powered on while it is plugged in. When not in use, the device should be turned off, unplugged from its power source, and securely stored.
  5. Contact Verizon at 855-205-2627 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET or online at www.EllipsisJetpackRecall.expertinquiry.com to receive a replacement hotspot free of charge and a return envelope for safe disposal.
  6. If your child received the device from a school, contact the school directly for instructions on receiving a free replacement and returning the recalled unit.
  7. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.

After the software update is applied, users should: (a) Leave the device powered on while it is plugged in.
