Summary

Hyundai Motor America is recalling 42,465 units of the 2025 Tucson and 2025 Santa Cruz vehicles. The console extension wiring assembly in these vehicles may be incorrectly routed, which can interfere with the safety mechanism that requires the brake pedal to be pressed before shifting. Owners are advised to use the parking brake whenever the vehicle is parked until the free repair is completed at a dealership.

Risk

The improper wiring allows the transmission to be shifted out of the 'Park' position without the driver pressing the brake pedal. This can lead to an unintended vehicle roll-away, which significantly increases the risk of a crash or injury to bystanders.

What You Should Do

  1. Use your parking brake every time you park the vehicle to prevent it from rolling away unexpectedly.
  2. Check if your vehicle is affected by visiting www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and entering your 17-character VIN, or contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.
  3. Schedule a service appointment with an authorized Hyundai dealer to have the console extension wiring assembly rerouted free of charge (Hyundai recall number 273).
  4. Follow these verbatim remedy instructions: "Owners are advised to use the parking brake when parking the vehicle. Dealers will reroute the console extension wiring assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 17, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 273."
