Volkswagen Group of America, Inc: Vehicle Doors May Open Unexpectedly

Summary

Volkswagen is recalling 99,064 of its 2021-2024 ID.4 vehicles because the door handles may allow water to leak into the internal circuit board. This moisture can cause the electronic door latch to malfunction, potentially resulting in the vehicle doors opening unexpectedly while you are driving. This recall expands upon previous recalls (23V-312 and 23V-213), and vehicles previously repaired under those campaigns must be brought in again for this new remedy.

Risk

A door that opens unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion increases the risk of occupants falling out or being injured in a collision. Water entering the circuit board assembly creates an electrical fault that triggers the door's release mechanism without driver input.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2021-2024 Volkswagen ID.4 and contact a local Volkswagen dealer to schedule a free inspection.
  2. If your vehicle was previously repaired for a similar door handle issue under recall numbers 23V-312 or 23V-213, you must still bring the vehicle in to receive this new, updated remedy.
  3. Arrange for a Volkswagen dealer to inspect and replace the door handles as necessary and perform a required vehicle software update at no cost to you.
  4. Contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and mention recall number 57J9 if you have specific questions about your vehicle.
  5. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for further information.
