Summary

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 35,325 of its 2021-2022 ID.4 electric vehicles. These vehicles may have been manufactured with door handles that allow water to enter the circuit board, which can cause the doors to pop open unexpectedly while the car is moving. This issue specifically occurs when the vehicle is subject to high lateral forces (such as during a turn) at speeds below 9 mph (15 km/h). Dealers will provide a free software update and inspect the door handles to ensure they are functioning correctly.

Risk

If a vehicle door opens unexpectedly while the car is in motion, it significantly increases the risk of occupants falling out or being injured during a turn or low-speed maneuver.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's manufacture year and model to see if it is a 2021 or 2022 Volkswagen ID.4.
  2. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer to schedule a free service appointment to have your vehicle's software updated and your door handles inspected.
  3. If you have questions regarding this recall, contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall numbers 57J5 or 57J8.
  4. Note that this specific recall (23V-312) has been replaced by a newer recall number, 24V-651; ensure your dealer checks for the most recent updates related to these door handles.
  5. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
