Summary

Usines Giant Factories has recalled approximately 168 gas water heaters (40, 50, and 75 gallon capacities) sold between June 2018 and July 2020. These white water heaters with a red 'Giant' logo feature Emerson control valves that can short circuit and overheat. Consumers should immediately contact Usines Giant Factories to arrange for a free replacement valve installed by a certified technician.

Risk

The Emerson control valve can short circuit and overheat, posing fire and burn hazards, as well as a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. There have been 20 reports of incidents in Canada, including one report requiring medical attention due to carbon monoxide release.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the nameplate near the gas control valve on your water heater to see if the model number is one of the following: UG40-38LFPV2-P1U-US, UG40-40LFPV2-N1U-US, UG50-38LFPV2-P1U-US, UG50-38LFPV2-P2U-US, UG50-38TFPDV1-N2U-US, UG50-40LFPV2-N1U-US, UG50-40LFPV2-N2U-US, UG75-76MEPV1-N2U-US, or UG75-76MEPV1-P2U-US.
  2. Locate the Emerson control valve (black with a white logo) and check the label on the right-hand side of its mounting bracket for model numbers 37H73A-301P1 (natural gas) or 37H74A-301P1 (propane) and a date code between 1821 and 1839.
  3. Consumers should immediately contact Usines Giant Factories, who will arrange to have the Emerson control valve replaced by a certified technician, and to receive a free replacement valve.
  4. If you continue to use the water heater while awaiting repair, ensure you have working carbon monoxide alarms installed outside of sleeping areas and on every level of the home.
  5. Contact Giant at 800-363-9354 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET on Friday, email recall@giantinc.com, or visit www.giantinc.com and click on 'Recall Information' for further assistance.
