Summary

Nissan North America is recalling 197,230 vehicles, including 2020-2023 Titan trucks, 2020-2022 Frontier trucks, and 2023 Z sports cars. A defect in the transmission may prevent the parking pawl from engaging when the vehicle is shifted into 'Park,' which can allow the vehicle to roll away unexpectedly. Nissan is offering free software reprogramming for the transmission and engine control modules to fix this issue.

Risk

If the transmission fails to lock into 'Park,' the vehicle may roll away after the driver exits, significantly increasing the risk of a crash and injury to the driver, passengers, or bystanders.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's make, model, and year to see if it is included in this recall: 2020-2023 Nissan Titan, 2020-2022 Nissan Frontier, or 2023 Nissan Z.
  2. Until your vehicle is repaired, you must apply the parking brake every single time you park your vehicle to prevent it from rolling away.
  3. Contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or your local authorized Nissan dealer to schedule a free repair. For Frontier and Z models, dealers will reprogram the Transmission Control Module (TCM); for 2020-2022 Titans, they will reprogram both the TCM and the Engine Control Module (ECM).
  4. Verify if your specific vehicle is affected by entering your 17-digit VIN at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls or by looking for Nissan recall numbers R22A9 or R22B1/2/3 in your records.
  5. For additional questions, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
