Summary

Toyota is recalling approximately 1,853,568 model year 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles because certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit correctly in the battery tray. If the battery is the wrong size, it can move during vehicle operation and come into contact with the hold-down bracket. Dealers will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover at no cost to the owner to ensure the battery remains secure.

Risk

A battery that is not properly secured can move and touch the metal hold-down bracket, which can cause an electrical short circuit. This short circuit significantly increases the risk of a fire occurring in the engine compartment.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if you own a 2013-2018 Toyota RAV4 vehicle.
  2. Check your mail for a notification letter from Toyota; owners of 2013-2014 models were mailed in December 2024, while others will be notified in phases through late July 2025.
  3. Contact a local Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair which includes replacing the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover.
  4. If you have questions regarding your vehicle's status, contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 and reference recall numbers 23TB13 or 23TA13.
  5. You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
