Summary

Toyota is recalling approximately 55,690 of its 2023-2024 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles because a manufacturing defect allows water to enter the rear door switches. This entry of water can cause an electrical short circuit, which may trigger the rear doors to unlatch and open unexpectedly while the vehicle is unlocked. Toyota dealers will replace both the right and left rear door opener switches with improved parts at no cost to owners.

Risk

If a rear door opens unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion or during a collision, occupants who are not properly restrained could fall out of the vehicle, significantly increasing the risk of injury to passengers and others on the road.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking if it is a 2023 or 2024 Toyota Prius or Prius Prime.
  2. Contact any authorized Toyota dealer to schedule a free appointment to have both the right and left rear door opener switches replaced.
  3. If you have questions, contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 and mention recall numbers 24TB06 or 24TA06.
  4. For additional information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
