Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 120 vehicles, including certain 2022-2023 models of the 3-Series, 4-Series, M3, M440i, and i4, because the automatic door locking system may fail. During a previous service visit, these vehicles may have received a replacement electronic control unit (ECU) with incorrect programming. This defect prevents the doors from locking automatically while the vehicle is in motion. Owners will receive a free software update from BMW dealers to correct the programming.

Risk

If the doors do not lock as intended while the vehicle is moving, they may open during a crash, which significantly increases the risk of occupants being injured or ejected from the vehicle.
