Summary

Universal Security Instruments is recalling approximately 8,000 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms because they may fail to sound when dangerous levels of carbon monoxide are present. The recall includes model MPC322S (battery-powered) and model MPC122S (hardwired), specifically units with manufacturing date codes 2017JUN09 and 2017JUN02. These white, circular alarms were sold at Walmart.com and through electrical distributors between June 2017 and December 2019. While no injuries have been reported, the firm has received two reports of alarms failing to activate during the required time frames. Consumers should contact the company for a free replacement.

Risk

The recalled alarms can fail to detect and alert residents to hazardous levels of carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless, and lethal gas. Failure of the device to alarm poses a direct risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or death to occupants.
