Custom Fire Apparatus, Inc.: Fire Trucks Recalled for Unintended Movement and Water Pump Failure

Summary

Custom Fire Apparatus is recalling two fire trucks, specifically certain 2022-2024 Gladiator, Metro Star, and FC-94 models. The transmission control module software may fail to lock into 4th gear after the vehicle is reversed, which is required to start the water pump. This can cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly or prevent the pump from operating during an emergency; however, both affected vehicles were already repaired in May 2023.

Risk

If the transmission fails to lock into 4th gear, the fire truck may move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the failure to initiate the water pump can delay fire suppression efforts, increasing the risk of injury during an emergency.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if you own a 2022-2024 Custom Fire Gladiator, Metro Star, or FC-94 vehicle.
  2. Verify if your specific vehicle has already received the necessary transmission control module (TCM) software update, as both units affected by this recall were reportedly repaired in May 2023.
  3. If you have questions or need to confirm your vehicle's status, contact Custom Fire customer service at 1-715-294-2555.
  4. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
