Ford Motor Company: 2020-2022 Explorer Vehicles Recalled for Rollaway Risk from System Reset

Summary

Ford is recalling approximately 3,674 of its 2020-2022 Explorer vehicles equipped with 2.3L engines and 10R60 automatic transmissions. An error in the powertrain control module can cause the system to reset unexpectedly while the vehicle is moving, which can damage the parking system components. Dealers will inspect the park system for any damage and perform necessary repairs free of charge.

Risk

If the park system is damaged by an unintended system reset, the vehicle may fail to shift into 'PARK' or may not stay securely in 'PARK' when the driver exits. This can result in the vehicle rolling away unexpectedly, which increases the risk of a crash and injuries to people outside or inside the vehicle.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle records or identification plate to confirm if you own a 2020, 2021, or 2022 Ford Explorer equipped with a 2.3L engine and 10R60 automatic transmission.
  2. Contact a Ford dealer to schedule a free inspection of your vehicle's park system. Dealers will repair any damage found during the inspection at no cost to you.
  3. You may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 23S05 for more information.
  4. For additional assistance or to check your VIN for other open recalls, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
