Two Deaths Reported with Ace Bayou Bean Bag Chairs; Recall Announced Due to Suffocation and Choking Hazards

Summary

Approximately 2.2 million Ace Bayou bean bag chairs are being recalled because children can unzip the outer and inner covers, crawl inside, and become trapped. Tragically, two deaths have been reported: a 13-year-old boy in Texas and a 3-year-old girl in Kentucky died from suffocation and inhaling the chair's foam beads after being found inside the chairs. The recalled products include various round (30, 32, and 40-inch diameter) and L-shaped (18" x 30" x 30") chairs sold in numerous colors and fabrics before July 2013.

Risk

The zippers on these chairs can be opened, allowing children to climb inside the chair where they can suffocate from a lack of air or choke on the small polystyrene foam beads used as filling.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your bean bag chair for a tag sewn into the cover seam that says "ACE BAYOU CORP" to see if it is included in this recall.
  2. Inspect the chair to see if the zippers can be opened; the recalled chairs have two zippers (an exterior one and one directly underneath) that are not permanently disabled.
  3. If the zippers can be opened, immediately move the bean bag chair to an area where children cannot reach or access it.
  4. Contact Ace Bayou toll-free at 855-571-8151 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit www.acebayou.com and click on "Recall Information" to request a free repair kit that will permanently disable the zippers.
  5. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions or need further assistance.
