Hyundai Motor America: Elantra Passenger Cars Recalled for Failing Internal Trunk Release Latch

Summary

Hyundai is recalling approximately 186,588 of its 2015-2016 Elantra vehicles because the trunk latch can become damaged and break. This defect prevents a person trapped inside the trunk from using the emergency release to get out. To fix this issue, Hyundai dealers will replace the trunk latch base assembly with a reinforced version at no cost to owners.

Risk

If the trunk latch fails, the internal emergency release handle will not function, potentially trapping a person inside the trunk compartment. This poses a significant risk of injury or death, especially in high temperatures or if a child accidentally crawls inside.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if you own a 2015 or 2016 Hyundai Elantra vehicle.
  2. Contact an authorized Hyundai dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the trunk latch base sub-assembly replaced.
  3. If you have already paid for a repair related to this trunk latch issue, ask your dealer or Hyundai customer service about the reimbursement plan.
  4. You may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and reference recall number 256.
  5. For additional information, you can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
