Summary

Approximately 134,000 Troy-Bilt electric leaf blowers (model TB180B) are being recalled because the internal impeller can break during use. If the impeller breaks, pieces can fly out and strike the operator, posing a serious risk of injury. MTD has received 17 incident reports, including 12 reports of lacerations requiring stitches, cuts, and bruises. These red 7.5 amp blowers were sold at Lowe's stores and online at troybilt.com between May 2011 and November 2013.

Risk

The blower's internal impeller can shatter while the motor is running, causing sharp plastic fragments to be ejected from the unit and strike the user or bystanders. This has already resulted in 12 reported injuries, including lacerations that required medical stitches.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled Troy-Bilt electric leaf blowers.
  2. Check the white label on the bottom of the motor housing to see if your blower is affected. The recall includes model TB180B and item number 41BA180G966.
  3. Identify your serial number on the same white label. Affected units have serial numbers ranging from S1D111XK0001 through S1F152XK2008. These units were manufactured between April 11, 2011 and June 15, 2012.
  4. Verify the manufacturing date using the 3rd through 6th characters of the serial number: the 3rd character is the month (D=April, E=May, F=June), the 4th and 5th are the day, and the 6th is the last digit of the year (1 for 2011 or 2 for 2012).
  5. If you purchased your blower at a Lowe's store, return it to any Lowe's location for a free replacement.
  6. If you purchased your blower online at www.troybilt.com, contact Troy-Bilt toll-free at (888) 848-6038 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to receive a free replacement.
