Summary

Trident Ultraviolet Corp. has recalled about 3,660 Trident Series 2 ultraviolet sanitation systems used for pools because electrical arcing inside the units can cause them to melt or catch fire. There have been 38 reports of these units melting or burning, including one reported burn injury to a consumer's hand and $23,000 in property damage. These gray tube-shaped systems were sold nationwide by pool companies between February 2009 and September 2013 for approximately $600. Consumers should stop using the units and contact Trident for a free repair kit.

Risk

Electrical arcing within the sanitation system can cause the unit to overheat and ignite. This poses a significant fire hazard to the home and a risk of burn injuries to anyone near the equipment.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your pool sanitation system to see if it is a Trident Series 2. Look for a black label on the front printed with 'Trident Ultraviolet Corporation,' 'Series 2,' and 'UV Ultraviolet Sanitation System.'
  2. Locate the silver sticker on the unit to find the date code. Visit www.uvrecall.org to verify if your specific date code is included in this recall.
  3. If your unit is affected, immediately unplug it from the electrical outlet. If the unit is hard-wired into your electrical system, disconnect the power or turn it off at the circuit breaker.
  4. Contact Trident toll-free at 855-522-8200 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or email assistance@uvrecall.org to request a free repair kit.
  5. Visit the recall website at www.uvrecall.org for additional information on obtaining your repair.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have further questions regarding this safety recall.
