Summary

Trek has recalled approximately 800 model year 2015-2017 Trek 720 Disc bicycles and 300 Bontrager Approved TLR Disc 700C 24H aftermarket wheels. The recall was initiated because the wheel's spokes can break at the hub or come into contact with the front brake caliper, which can cause the rider to lose control and fall. There have been 10 reported incidents, including one serious injury involving a broken vertebra. These products were sold at bicycle stores nationwide from November 2014 through October 2016.

Risk

A broken wheel spoke can strike the front brake caliper while the bike is in motion, potentially causing the front wheel to stop suddenly or causing the rider to lose control. This defect poses a significant fall hazard, which has already resulted in one report of a broken vertebra.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled Trek 720 Disc bicycles and Bontrager Approved TLR Disc wheel sets.
  2. Check your bicycle frame for the model number '720' on the down tube and 'Trek' printed across the frame. These bikes have aluminum frames and carbon forks and were sold in sizes 49 through 61 cm.
  3. Identify aftermarket wheels by checking the rim for the 'Bontrager TLR' mark and verifying the wheel has 24 silver spokes.
  4. Bring the affected bicycle or wheel set to an authorized Trek retailer for a free inspection and a free replacement of the wheels.
  5. Contact Trek at 800-373-4594 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or visit www.trekbikes.com and click on 'Safety & Recalls' for more information.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
