Trek Recalls Bicycles Equipped with Front Disc Brakes to Replace Quick Release Lever Due to Crash Hazard

Summary

Trek is recalling approximately 900,000 bicycles in the U.S. and 98,000 in Canada because a front wheel quick release lever can contact the front disc brake while riding. This defect can cause the front wheel to stop suddenly or detach, which has already led to three reported incidents including serious injuries such as quadriplegia, facial injuries, and a fractured wrist. Affected bicycles are Trek models from years 2000 through 2015 equipped with front disc brakes and a specific type of black or silver quick release lever. Consumers should contact an authorized retailer for a free replacement lever and a $20 credit for Bontrager accessories.

Risk

If the front quick release lever is left open or becomes loose, it can swing 180 degrees and get caught in the front disc brake assembly. This mechanical interference can lock the front wheel instantly or cause it to separate from the bike entirely, throwing the rider and causing severe injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your bicycle to see if it is a Trek model year 2000 through 2015 that features both front disc brakes and a front quick release lever.
  2. Inspect the front quick release lever (the black or silver handle used to attach the wheel); if the lever can be opened a full 180 degrees to the point where it can touch the disc brake assembly, it is included in this recall.
  3. Immediately stop using any bicycle identified as being part of this recall.
  4. Contact an authorized Trek retailer to schedule a free installation of a newly designed quick release mechanism on your front wheel.
  5. Receive a $20 coupon from the retailer upon completion of the repair, which is redeemable toward any Bontrager merchandise through December 31, 2015.
  6. Contact Trek at 800-373-4594 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or online at www.trekbikes.com and click on 'Safety & Recalls' for more information.
  7. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 for additional questions regarding this safety recall.
