BMW of North America, LLC: Various 2023 BMW and Toyota Vehicles Recalled for Transmission Seizure Risk

Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 552 vehicles across several 2023 models, including the Toyota GR Supra, BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 8 Series, X3, X4, X5, X6, and Z4. An improperly manufactured weld on the transmission control unit cover can allow oil to leak into the internal electronics. If this occurs, the transmission gears could suddenly seize while driving, leading to an immediate loss of power. Dealers will replace the transmission mechatronics module and fluid at no cost to owners.

Risk

Leaking transmission oil can damage the control electronics, causing the transmission to lock up or seize without warning. This results in a sudden loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.
