Summary

Kia America is recalling 3,555 model year 2022-2023 Carnival vehicles that are equipped with a genuine Kia tow hitch harness, whether installed when the vehicle was new or purchased later as an accessory. Water can collect on the tow hitch harness module's printed circuit board, which can cause an electrical short circuit and lead to a fire. This issue can occur while the vehicle is being driven or even when it is parked and turned off.

Risk

An electrical short caused by water accumulation on the circuit board creates a fire risk; because this can happen while parked, it poses a danger to nearby structures. Owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors and away from garages or buildings until the repair is finished.

What You Should Do

  1. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage or carport until the recall repair is completed due to the risk of fire while parked.
  2. Check if your 2022-2023 Kia Carnival is equipped with a Genuine Kia accessory trailer tow hitch assembly installed at the factory or purchased through a Kia dealership.
  3. Contact an authorized Kia dealer to schedule a free inspection; if a genuine Kia tow hitch harness is found, the dealer will install a new fuse and wire extension kit at no cost to you.
  4. If you have questions, contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and mention recall number SC265.
  5. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
