Summary

Kia America, Inc. is recalling approximately 70,887 vehicles, including certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid, 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid, and 2017-2022 Sportage models. These vehicles may be equipped with a tow hitch harness that can accumulate moisture and debris on its circuit board, leading to an electrical short. This short circuit can cause a fire while the vehicle is either parked or being driven. Dealers will inspect the vehicle and replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module as necessary, free of charge.

Risk

An electrical short in the tow hitch harness can cause a fire even when the engine is turned off. Because of this fire risk, owners should park their vehicles outdoors and away from garages or other structures until the recall repair has been completed.

What You Should Do

  1. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage due to fire risk.
  2. Check if your vehicle is one of the following models equipped with a Kia tow hitch harness (either factory-installed or purchased as an accessory): 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid, 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid, or 2017-2022 Sportage.
  3. Contact an authorized Kia dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair, which may include replacing the fuse and/or the tow hitch harness module.
  4. If you have additional questions, contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall number SC249.
  5. Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
