Hyundai Motor America: Palisade SUVs Recalled Due to Tow Hitch Harness Fire Risk

Summary

Hyundai Motor America is recalling approximately 244,980 model year 2020-2022 Palisade vehicles. These SUVs may have a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment or purchased as an accessory through a dealership that is prone to electrical shorts. Debris and moisture can accumulate on the tow hitch harness module's circuit board, which can cause the harness to short circuit and catch fire. As a remedy, Hyundai dealers will inspect the vehicle and install a new fuse and wire extension kit if necessary, free of charge.

Risk

A short circuit in the tow hitch harness can cause a vehicle fire while the car is being driven or while it is parked. Owners should park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the recall repair is completed to prevent potential house fires.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2020, 2021, or 2022 Hyundai Palisade equipped with a tow hitch harness installed at the factory or purchased as a dealer accessory.
  2. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage due to fire risk — until the recall repair has been performed.
  3. Contact any Hyundai dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair, which will involve installing a new fuse and a wire extension kit as needed.
  4. If you have questions, contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and reference Hyundai recall number 235.
  5. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
