Summary

Kia America is recalling approximately 36,417 of its 2020-2022 Telluride vehicles that may have a Genuine Kia 4-pin tow hitch harness installed either as original equipment or purchased as an accessory. Moisture and debris can collect on the tow hitch harness module's circuit board, causing a short circuit that can lead to a fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven. Kia will provide a free repair that includes a new fuse, a wiring harness extension, and an inspection of the current assembly.

Risk

A short circuit in the tow hitch harness can cause a fire even when the engine is off. Because of this risk, owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors and away from garages, carports, or other structures until the recall repair has been completed.

What You Should Do

  1. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage or near your home due to fire risk.
  2. Check if your vehicle is a 2020-2022 Kia Telluride equipped with a Genuine Kia 4-pin tow hitch harness, whether it was factory-installed or purchased as an accessory from a Kia dealership.
  3. Contact any authorized Kia dealer to schedule a free repair; dealers will install a new fuse and a wiring harness extension, and will inspect and replace the tow hitch harness assembly if necessary.
  4. For more information or to check your VIN, contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall number SC247.
  5. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional details.
