Summary

Approximately 83,000 Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs (in addition to 91,000 previously recalled) used in 41 models of Toshiba Satellite laptops are being recalled because they can overheat. The firm has received five reports of these battery packs overheating and melting, though no injuries have been reported. These affected battery packs were sold both pre-installed in laptops and separately as replacement parts or repair items between June 2011 and November 2016. Toshiba is providing free replacement battery packs to all affected consumers.

Risk

The lithium-ion battery packs can malfunction and overheat internally, which creates a significant risk of the battery melting, catching fire, and causing burns to the user or property damage.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your battery pack's part number, which is printed on the label of the battery itself. Affected part numbers begin with 'G71C' (G71C*******).
  2. Visit http://go.toshiba.com/battery to use the 'battery pack utility' which can automatically check if your specific battery is part of this expanded recall, or manually enter your laptop and battery serial numbers on the site.
  3. If your battery pack is affected, immediately power off the laptop and remove the battery from the device.
  4. Follow the instructions on Toshiba's website or contact them at 866-224-1346 between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. PT to obtain a free replacement battery pack.
  5. Until you receive your replacement battery, you may continue to use your laptop safely only by plugging it directly into AC power with the battery removed.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 for additional questions regarding this recall.

Your Remedy Options

Consumers should immediately go to the firm's website and click on the battery pack utility link in the first shadowed box on the page. Consumers also can perform a manual check using the laptop and battery pack's model, part and serial numbers. If it is part of the recall, consumers should power off the laptop, remove the battery and follow the instructions to obtain a free replacement battery pack. Until a replacement battery pack is received, consumers should use the laptop by plugging into AC power only. Battery packs previously identified as not affected by the March 30, 2016 recall are included in this expanded announcement.
