Summary

Thermos is recalling approximately 8.2 million Stainless King Food Jars and Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles because the stoppers can forcefully eject when opened. This ejection occurs if perishable food or drinks are stored for long periods, leading to serious impact and laceration risks. The recall includes 16-oz, 24-oz, and 40-oz containers sold in various colors at major retailers like Target and Walmart between March 2008 and July 2024. Thermos will provide a free replacement stopper or a replacement bottle depending on which model you own.

Risk

The internal stopper can explosively pop out when a consumer attempts to open the container, particularly if pressure has built up from fermenting or aging contents. Thermos has received 27 reports of this occurring, including incidents of lacerations and three cases of permanent vision loss due to eye impacts.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the bottom of your container to see if it has model number SK3000, SK3010, or SK3020.
  2. Examine the stopper: Recalled stoppers have a solid, flat black surface. If your stopper has a circular pressure relief valve in the center with two small recessed grips, it is not affected by this recall.
  3. If you have a recalled SK3000 or SK3020 Food Jar, stop using it immediately, throw away the stopper, and contact Thermos to receive a free replacement pressure relief stopper. You will need to provide a photo of the disposed stopper.
  4. If you have a recalled SK3010 Sportsman Bottle, stop using it immediately and contact Thermos to receive a prepaid shipping label to return the bottle for a free replacement.
  5. Contact Thermos online at https://support.thermos.com, call 662-563-6822 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit https://www.thermos.com and click 'Recall Info' for further instructions.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 for additional information regarding this recall.
