Summary

Tesla is recalling approximately 10,500 Powerwall 2 AC battery power systems due to a defect in the lithium-ion battery cells. These cells can cause the unit to stop functioning, leading to overheating, smoke, or flames. Tesla has received 22 reports of units overheating, including five reports of fire and six reports of smoking, which have resulted in minor property damage. Tesla is offering a free replacement unit and has remotely discharged affected systems that are currently online to reduce fire risk until the replacement can be installed.

Risk

The battery cells can malfunction and overheat during normal operation, potentially catching fire or emitting smoke. This poses a serious risk of fire-related injuries, burns, or death to residents and significant damage to property.
