Summary

Terry and Joe Baker Farms (doing business as Baker Farms) is recalling 891 cases of 1-pound bags of fresh Kale sold under the Baker Farms, Kroger, and SEG Grocers brand names. This recall was initiated after a random test by the Ohio Department of Agriculture found the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The affected kale was distributed across eleven states including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New York, and Ohio. Consumers who purchased this kale should not consume it and should return it to the store where it was bought for a full refund.

Risk

The product is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea; however, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
