Summary

Approximately 24,000 ceramic beer tap handles are being recalled because they can break during normal use, creating sharp edges. This recall involves 25 different custom-made designs sold directly to breweries across the country between November 2002 and May 2006. While no injuries have been reported yet, consumers and brewery staff should stop using these handles immediately to prevent cuts.

Risk

The ceramic material of the tap handle can fracture or shatter while being pulled to dispense beer, potentially causing deep cuts or lacerations to the user's hand.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the base of your ceramic beer tap handle for a gray metal ring.
  2. Identify the affected handles by looking for the engravings 'Taphandles Inc.' and 'Made in China' on the gray metal base.
  3. Review the designs to see if your handle matches one of the 25 custom versions, which include brands like Appalachian Brewing Co., Samuel Adams, Schlafly, and Widmer Brothers.
  4. Immediately stop using any identified ceramic tap handles and remove them from service.
  5. Contact Taphandles toll-free at (877) 855-6383 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit www.taphandles.com/recall to receive a free replacement tap handle.
  6. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
