General Motors, LLC: Tailgate May Open While Driving

Summary

General Motors is recalling 131,231 Chevrolet Silverado HD (2500, 3500) and GMC Sierra HD (2500, 3500) trucks from the 2024 model year equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. Water can leak into the tailgate's electronic release switch, causing a short circuit that may trigger the tailgate to open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in Park. To fix this, dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assembly with an improved version for free.

Risk

If the tailgate unlatches inadvertently, unsecured cargo can fall out of the truck bed while driving, creating a significant road hazard for other vehicles and increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Visually inspect your tailgate before every trip to ensure it is fully closed and latched before you begin driving.
  2. Contact a Chevrolet dealer (1-800-222-1020) or a GMC dealer (1-800-462-8782) to schedule a free replacement of the exterior touchpad switch assembly. Reference GM recall number N242469160.
  3. Follow the official remedy instructions: 'Owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge.'
  4. Look for an official owner notification letter, which GM began mailing on December 17, 2024, for further details on your specific vehicle.
  5. For additional questions or to check your VIN, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
