General Motors, LLC: Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Recalled Due to Tailgate Opening While Driving

Summary

General Motors is recalling approximately 570,434 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks from the 2020-2024 model years. These vehicles are equipped with power-unlatching tailgates that may short circuit if water gets into the electronic gate-release switch. This defect can cause the tailgate to unexpectedly unlatch while the vehicle is in park. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies with a more water-resistant version free of charge.

Risk

If the tailgate unlatches while the vehicle is stationary, it may then open fully while the truck is being driven. This can cause unsecured cargo to fall out of the truck bed into the road, creating a hazard for other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's make, model, and year to see if it is one of the affected 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, GMC Sierra 2500, or 3500 trucks equipped with a power-unlatching tailgate.
  2. Before driving, manually check that the tailgate is fully closed and securely latched to prevent cargo loss.
  3. Contact a Chevrolet dealer at 1-800-222-1020 or a GMC dealer at 1-800-462-8782 to schedule a free replacement of the exterior touchpad switch assembly. Mention GM recall number N232426400.
  4. You can also verify if your specific Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is affected by visiting www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
