Summary

Swagway is recalling about 267,000 X1 Hands-Free Smartboard self-balancing scooters (hoverboards) because the lithium-ion battery packs can overheat. There have been 42 reports of the boards smoking, catching fire, or exploding, including 16 reports of injuries such as burns to the neck, legs, and arms, as well as severe property damage. These hoverboards were sold in gold, black, blue, green, red, pink, and white at major retailers and online between September 2015 and March 2016 for between $400 and $500. Consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately and contact the manufacturer for a repair or credit.

Risk

The lithium-ion battery packs inside the hoverboard can overheat during use or charging, causing the device to smoke, catch fire, or explode. This poses a significant risk of severe burn injuries and fire damage to homes and property.
