Suunto Recalls Air Hoses Used With Scuba Gear Due To Drowning Hazard

Summary

Suunto is recalling about 1,300 high-pressure rubber air hoses used with scuba diving gear because they can leak or rupture. These black hoses were sold individually and as components of Suunto Cobra, Cobra 3, Vyper, and Zoop dive computers and analog pressure gauges. While no injuries have been reported, a hose failure underwater leads to a loss of breathing gas, which creates an immediate danger to the diver. Consumers should stop using the affected gear and contact an authorized Suunto dealer for a free replacement.

Risk

The hose can suddenly leak or burst during a dive, causing the diver to lose their breathing gas supply rapidly. This failure can lead to a loss of buoyancy control and an emergency ascent, posing a high risk of drowning.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using any scuba equipment equipped with the recalled high-pressure air hose.
  2. Identify the affected hose by looking for the batch code '1812' and the text '5000 PSIG PRESSURE TESTED - MADE IN THE U.S.A' printed on the black rubber surface of the hose.
  3. Check if your hose was purchased separately or as part of a Suunto Cobra, Cobra 3, SM-36 model pressure gauge, or with Vyper and Zoop model dive computers between November 2012 and July 2013.
  4. Bring the affected hose, pressure gauge, or dive computer to the nearest authorized Suunto Dive dealer or Suunto Authorized Service Center to receive a free replacement hose.
  5. Alternatively, visit www.suunto.com/servicerequest to use the Suunto Online Service Request to have your product picked up and delivered for the hose replacement.
  6. Contact Suunto Support toll-free at 855-258-0900 anytime or email support@suunto.com for assistance.
  7. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
