Summary

Surly Bikes is recalling approximately 5,139 front bicycle racks, specifically the 8-Pack Rack and 24-Pack Rack models, as well as Pack Rat Bicycles that were sold with these racks. These tubular steel racks can loosen during use and come into contact with the front wheel, potentially causing a rider to crash. Surly has received 15 reports of rack failures, resulting in three minor injuries and seven serious injuries, including a fractured vertebra. These products were sold in black and silver finishes at bicycle stores nationwide and online from December 2015 through September 2019.

Risk

The front rack can detach or loosen, shifting into the path of the front wheel and causing it to stop abruptly. This poses a significant crash hazard that can lead to serious injuries such as fractures, lacerations, and sprains.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using any bicycle equipped with a Surly 8-Pack Rack or Surly 24-Pack Rack.
  2. Identify your product by checking for the Surly brand name and the specific rack style: the 8-Pack Rack (smaller platform) or the 24-Pack Rack (larger platform), finished in either black or silver.
  3. If you own a Surly Pack Rat complete bicycle, check if it is equipped with one of the affected 8-Pack Racks.
  4. Contact the local bike shop or the online retailer where you originally purchased the rack or bicycle to arrange for a free professional repair.
  5. For additional information, contact Surly Bikes toll-free at 877-773-3191 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit www.surlybikes.com and click on the 'Safety Recall 8 and 24-Pack Rack' button.
