Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.: 2023-2024 ID.4 Vehicles Recalled for Flammable Sunshade Fabric

Summary

Volkswagen is recalling approximately 24,025 of its 2023-2024 ID.4 vehicles because the interior sunshade for the panoramic glass roof may not be sufficiently fire retardant. These sunshades fail to meet federal safety standards for flammability of interior materials. If a fire occurs inside the vehicle, the sunshade fabric could fuel the fire further, increasing the risk of injury to occupants. Owners can have this issue fixed by visiting a dealer to have a flame retardant treatment applied to the fabric at no cost.

Risk

The sunshade material is not sufficiently fire-resistant, meaning that in the event of an internal fire, the fabric may burn more quickly and intensely than allowed by federal safety standards, potentially spreading the fire and causing injuries.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your VIN on the NHTSA website or contacting your local Volkswagen dealer regarding 2023-2024 ID.4 models.
  2. Schedule an appointment with an authorized Volkswagen dealer for a free service to apply flame retardant to the sunshade fabric.
  3. If you have additional questions, contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 60G3.
  4. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
