Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC: Sunroof Panel Recalled for Detachment and Road Hazard Risks

Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 131,653 luxury vehicles including various 2001-2011 C-Class, CLK, E-Class, and CLS models because the glass sunroof panel may not be properly secured. This recall expands upon a previous 2019 safety action due to a defect where the bonding between the glass and the frame can fail. If the panel is not correctly attached, it may completely detach from the vehicle while driving. Dealers will inspect the sunroof and replace the panel if necessary at no cost to the owner.

Risk

A detached sunroof panel can fly off the vehicle and become a road hazard for other drivers, significantly increasing the risk of a crash or injury to others on the road.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is one of the affected models: 2001-2011 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, CLK, E-Class, or CLS-Class.
  2. Locate your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and visit www.nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm if your specific car is part of this recall (NHTSA Campaign Number 22V954).
  3. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to schedule a free inspection and, if necessary, a replacement of the glass sunroof panel.
  4. If you have previously paid for this repair or have questions about the internal recall numbers (2023010004, 2023010005, or 2023010006), contact Mercedes-Benz USA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
  5. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
