STUBAI Recalls Ice Axes Due to Laceration and Impact Hazards

Summary

STUBAI has recalled approximately 20 Tour Lite Telescope ice axes because the knife inside the handle can unexpectedly detach. This defect can lead to serious cuts or impact injuries for the user or anyone nearby. These red and black axes were sold at various mountaineering stores and online at campsaver.com from June 2015 through June 2016. STUBAI is providing a free replacement for all affected axes.

Risk

The knife component within the axe handle is prone to detaching during use. If this occurs, the loose blade or the axe head itself can cause lacerations or strike the user or bystanders.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your STUBAI Tour Lite Telescope ice axe for specific batch numbers to see if it is included in this recall. Look for the number 865 stamped on the aluminum head and the number 870 stamped on the top of the red shaft.
  2. Inspect the connection between the head and the shaft; if there is no rivet visible connecting them, the product is unsafe and must not be used.
  3. Immediately stop using the recalled ice axe if it matches the batch numbers or is missing the connecting rivet.
  4. Contact STUBAI or Liberty Mountain at 800-366-2666 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to receive instructions on how to return your axe for a free replacement.
  5. Visit www.stubai-sports.com or www.libertymountain.com and click on the 'product recall' link at the top of the page for additional details and images showing how to identify the affected parts.
  6. For additional questions, call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
