Summary

Step2 is recalling approximately 14,000 Whisper Ride Touring Wagons because the removable blue seat backs can detach unexpectedly. There have been 29 reports of seat backs detaching, which resulted in 28 children falling out of the wagon, leading to injuries like bumped heads, bruises, and scratches. These two-seat plastic wagons have a tan base and a red canopy and were sold exclusively at Toys R Us from February 2013 through August 2013. Step2 is providing a free repair kit to fix the issue.

Risk

The blue seat backs can come loose from the wagon frame, causing a child to fall backwards or out of the moving wagon. This has already resulted in 14 reported head injuries and 9 instances of bruises or lacerations.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the Step2 Whisper Ride Touring Wagon and inspect the seat belt attachment point.
  2. Check if the seat belt is attached directly to the removable blue seat back; if it is, your wagon is included in this recall and is unsafe to use.
  3. If the seat belt is attached to the tan wagon base rather than the blue seat back, your wagon is not included in the recall and is safe to use.
  4. Contact Step2 toll-free at 866-860-1887 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to obtain a free repair kit.
  5. Visit the firm's website at www.step2.com and click on 'Product Recall' for additional information and assembly instructions for the repair kit.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 for any further questions regarding this safety recall.
