Summary

Nissan North America is recalling 1,063 of its 2023 Ariya electric vehicles because the steering wheel bolt may have been tightened incorrectly or not installed at all. If the bolt is loose or missing, the steering wheel can completely detach from the steering column while the vehicle is in motion. Nissan began notifying affected owners by phone in early March 2023 and is following up with formal notification letters. Dealers will replace the steering wheel bolt free of charge to ensure the steering wheel is securely attached.

Risk

A steering wheel that becomes loose or detaches while driving causes an immediate loss of steering control. This defect significantly increases the risk of a crash, though no specific injuries or incidents were detailed in the report.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if you own a 2023 Nissan Ariya vehicle.
  2. Gently rock the steering wheel forward and back with your hands to check for any looseness or unusual movement.
  3. If the steering wheel feels loose, contact a Nissan dealer immediately to arrange for vehicle transport and repair; do not attempt to drive the vehicle if the steering feels unstable.
  4. Contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 and mention recall number PC956 for more information.
  5. For additional assistance, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
