Summary

Williamsen-Godwin Truck Body Company LLC is recalling 12 of its WPED5W-SL2255 trailers that are equipped with Smart-Steer 2.0 self-steering axles. The steering arm on these trailers can fracture under certain conditions, particularly during low-speed maneuvers or when subjected to high side-loading. If the arm breaks, the steering arm and tie rod can separate from the vehicle and fall onto the roadway. Dealers will install a new steering arm and apply additional welds to the assembly to ensure it is secure.

Risk

A fractured steering arm and tie rod can separate from the trailer and fall to the ground, which can lead to a loss of steering control or create a road hazard, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your trailer is a Williamsen-Godwin WPED5W-SL2255 model equipped with the Smart-Steer 2.0 self-steering axle system.
  2. Contact Williamsen-Godwin customer service at 1-801-973-9400 to confirm if your specific unit is affected and to arrange for a free repair.
  3. If affected, take your trailer to an authorized dealer to have a new steering arm installed and additional welds applied at no cost to you.
  4. For additional information or to report concerns, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
