BMW of North America, LLC: Various BMW Vehicles Recalled for Starter Motor Overheating and Fire Risk

Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 105,588 vehicles including various 2019-2021 X5, X7, 3 Series, X6, 7 Series, and 8 Series models. The starter motor in these vehicles can fail, and if a driver repeatedly attempts to start the engine afterward, the starter can overheat from an electrical overload. This defect can ignite nearby materials in the engine compartment, causing a vehicle fire. BMW dealers will provide a free software update to address the issue and prevent the electrical overload.

Risk

If the starter motor fails and the driver makes repeated start attempts, the motor may experience an electrical overload and overheat. This heat can ignite combustible materials near the engine, significantly increasing the risk of a fire.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is included in this recall by locating your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and entering it at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls or through the BMW owner portal.
  2. Identify your vehicle from the affected list: 2019-2020 X5 and X7; 2020 3 Series Sedan, X6, 8 Series Convertible, 8 Series Coupe, and 8 Series Gran Coupe; and 2020-2021 7 Series Sedan.
  3. If your vehicle fails to start, do not make repeated, rapid attempts to restart the engine, as this may cause the starter motor to overheat.
  4. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free service appointment for a vehicle software update designed to prevent starter motor overload.
  5. If you have further questions, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
