Summary

Approximately 7,000 SRAM i-Motion 3 three-speed internal gear hubs (coaster brake version) are being recalled because the brakes can fail during use. This recall affects hubs installed on several Electra bicycle models, including the Cruiser Custom 3i, Coaster 3i, Hawaii 3i, Hawaii 3i 24, and Straight 8, as well as hubs sold individually as aftermarket parts. SRAM has received five reports of brake failure, including one report of a minor injury. Consumers should immediately stop using bicycles equipped with these hubs and contact SRAM for a partial refund.

Risk

The internal braking mechanism in the gear hub can fail, preventing the rider from stopping the bicycle. This poses a significant crash hazard that can result in serious injury or death, especially on bicycles with no secondary braking system.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the shell of your bicycle's rear wheel hub for the text 'SRAM i-Motion 3' and confirm if it has a metal brake arm extending from the axle.
  2. Identify if your bicycle is an affected Electra model: Electra Cruiser Custom 3i, Electra Coaster 3i, Electra Hawaii 3i, Electra Hawaii 3i 24, or Electra Straight 8 sold between April 2010 and December 2018.
  3. Immediately stop riding any bicycle equipped with the recalled SRAM i-Motion 3 gear hub.
  4. Contact SRAM at 800-346-2928 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET Monday through Thursday, or 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET on Friday, to receive instructions on how to obtain a partial refund.
  5. Visit www.sram.com or www.zipp.com and click on 'Recall Notice' for additional information and instructions.
  6. For further assistance, you can contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
