Summary

SpeeCo has recalled approximately 60,000 fence wire stretchers (models S16111500, S161115TSC, and S16112000) due to a defect where wires can unexpectedly release from the tool. There have been two reports of recoiling wires causing cuts, abrasions, and scratches to users. These black tools with rubber-gripped lever handles were sold at Ace and True Value hardware stores, farm ranch stores, and Amazon.com between April 2015 and August 2016. Consumers should stop using the stretchers immediately and contact SpeeCo for a full refund.

Risk

A wire being tightened can suddenly slip or release from the stretcher and recoil with significant force. This recoiling wire can strike the user or bystanders, causing lacerations, deep cuts, and other injuries.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled SpeeCo fence wire stretchers.
  2. Check the product packaging or your purchase records for model numbers S16111500, S161115TSC, or S16112000 to see if your tool is affected.
  3. Identify the product by its appearance: it is a black metal tool approximately 32 inches long with a rubber grip on the lever handle, used for tightening barbed or smooth wire.
