Specialized Bicycle Components Recalls Aerobars Due to Fall Hazard

Summary

Specialized Bicycle Components is recalling approximately 8,300 Aerobars sold individually and as original equipment on specific Specialized Shiv and Transition Apex bicycles. The bolt used to secure these aerobars to the bike can loosen unexpectedly, potentially causing the bars to move or detach during use. There have been four reports of these bolts loosening, though no injuries have been reported to date. These handlebars were sold at authorized dealers and online from November 2011 to February 2015, and Specialized will provide replacement mounting hardware to fix the issue.

Risk

If the mounting bolt loosens while the bicycle is in motion, the rider may lose control of the steering or the aerobars may shift suddenly, leading to a fall and serious physical injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop riding any bicycle equipped with the recalled carbon or alloy Aerobars.
  2. Identify if your Aerobars are affected: The carbon model is black with a white Specialized logo on the top; the alloy model is black with no markings. These were sold individually or on 2012–2015 Specialized Shiv and 2013 Specialized Transition Apex bicycles.
  3. Contact an authorized Specialized Bicycle dealer or Specialized Bicycle Components directly at 800-722-4423 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday to receive replacement extension mounting hardware.
  4. Visit www.specialized.com and click on 'Safety Notices' for additional identification photos and information on obtaining the free replacement hardware.
  5. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
